Inquiry question: Why are there different types of vehicles around us?

The Kindergartens Two are embarking on the inquiry topic, “Why are there different types of vehicles around us?” based on the children's interest for term 1. They will explore and investigate the different vehicles that they see around in their daily lives and make connections! Through this, children will be able to explore more and be curious about the different types of vehicles and its uses.

Week 4: Why do we need so many different types of vehicles?

January 25, 2019

Joshua brought the book Cars, Trucks and things that go”into class. Teacher Shannon shared the book to the class and everyone started asking different questions such as “What is the difference between a tractor and a truck?”

After reading the book, the children understood the purpose of different vehicles and did up a mind map together about the different vehicles they learnt.

Week 3: Why do we need Aeroplanes?

January 18, 2019

Teacher Shannon brought a book in this week, Angela’s Airplanes. After reading the book to the children, the children loved it and wanted to know even more about aeroplanes. Teacher Shannon decided to let the children do a small activity by allowing them to fold paper aeroplanes. The K2s then went outdoors to test out the different aeroplanes they made on their own! They even helped one another document how far their aeroplane can fly by videoing it down using the iPad.

After outdoors, they gathered back in class and shared about their experience in making a paper Aeroplane. Teacher Shannon then provided time for children to discuss about how they can improve their aeroplanes and also find out different ways to create an aeroplane that can even fly further. In their next lesson, teacher Shannon brought the materials that the children suggested and they tried making the aeroplanes out of the materials. Turns out, all you need is a heavier weight and wider wings!

Learning objective

1. Children will be able to fold a paper aeroplane.

2. Children will be able to think critically and creatively on how to create a sturdier aeroplane.

Teaching technique

The teaching technique used here was problem-solving. She created space for children to problem solve, create time to problem solve, used materials to encourage problem-solving and chose an appropriate problem to solve. Problem-solving is vital as it helps develop children’s creativity and it allows them to gain confidence in their ability to work things out for themselves (MacNaughton & Williams, 2009; p. 348-349).

Week 2: How can we create our favourite vehicles with other materials?

January 11, 2019

Parental Involvement Activity - In week 2, the teacher asked the children on what would they want to do together with their parents during their morning meeting. After further discussion, they have decided that they would like to make a 3D vehicle with their parents! The teacher challenged the children further by asking them how they would like to make their vehicles yet at the same time, without wasting much materials and money. The children came up with the idea of using only recycled materials and everyone agreed on it.

Within 2 days, everyone made their vehicles! The children did a show and tell and shared with their classmates about the process that they did together with their parents over the weekend. The 3D artworks are also displayed in the classroom afterwards.

During show and tell

Evan: I did an ambulance using my baby’s diaper box and the wheels I use CDs! Who want to try riding my ambulance?

Danial: Mine is a police car. I use a toy box that I don’t want already, my mummy say can use. I like police car and policeman!

Week 1: What are the different types of vehicles around us?

January 4, 2019

In week 1, the Kindergarten Twos discussed about the different vehicles they see often in their neighbourhoods such as cars, lorries, trucks, bicycles and aeroplanes. They shared about their favourite vehicles as well, and all of them even did up an art piece of their favourite vehicles, using different shapes!

Children’s voices

Garry: I used an oval and rectangle to do a submarine. There are also many fishes in the sea and they are looking at the submarine.

Kelly: This is bus 913. I always take the bus to school so I like the bus! I also put 3 rectangles for the window. My tree is pink.

Tessa: Mine is rocket. I never sit rocket before but I see on the iPad before. My rocket is made using triangles and rectangles. I am painting houses also. I think there are houses in space.
